2 DIMENSIONAL WORK
All 2-D work is hand painted.
Everything is made using custom designed and made machinery which enabled me to turn the paper at varying velocities. I was also able to variate the diameter of the design and the method of paint application.
I formulated differing approaches to layering the paint on the page resulting in different outcomes. I used an airbrush to create color gradients, I applied thick paint mediums to add textures and injected paint from different heights to form oversized spray patterns.
The constant movement of the paper as the paint is applied gives the work a sense of motion, the process creates irregularities, distorted layers and faded color gradients. There is sense of movement and freedom yet this irregularity is bound by the formality of the circle.
It feels loose yet constrained, perfect, imperfection.
3 DIMENSIONAL WORK
All 3D work is hand made.
I wanted my work to evolve to have physical presents, it needed to have form and dimension, to be lifted off the page. To achieve this I’ve used an assortment of methods. I formed epoxy resin, ripped clay, shaped putties and manipulated adhesives to build the required dimensions. I then coated the base forms with paint to give the work color and depth.
I have focused on natural patterns, pulling them out of context and recreating their textures to highlight the brilliance and ingenuity of the nature that surrounds us. I have distorted the original scale, magnified slime mold and re-proportioned insects in order to change the viewers perception with the intent on making the unseen noticeable.
I remained true to the circular form. It’s nature’s finest example of simplicity. It’s also a boundary that both limits and extendeds creativity. A circle is a constant form, a recognizable shape that features in all the work. An recognisable identifier.
It is absolute perfection and for me it is always the best starting place.
SCALE
The online digital format removes the sense of scale. So, I’ve placed a few images here to give a sense of proportion using some easily recognizable Golden paint bottles.
The 2D work is all built on Yupo paper 26 x 20, the circle dimensions varying as I developed different placement techniques.
The 3-D work is all mounted on 28 x 24 wooden boards with a circle dimension of approximately 20 inches.
RECOGNITION
Thanks to those who have unknowingly contributed to this site. I am grateful for the images I’ve compiled into my inspiration page. These images highlight the mood of the work and perfectly summarize its intended aesthetic. On the large resolution format of this site I’m able to acknowledge the individual contributors, I’m not able to do that on the phone. Please check back on your mac to know who provided what.
