LAMELLAE

LAMELLAE

Lamellae are the gills of a fungus. Blade-like structures attached to the underside of the cap of many Basidiomycete fungi, a grouping that includes mushrooms, shelf fungi, rusts, smuts and jelly fungi. A fungus lamellae are covered with basidia, these are microscopic structures on which spores are produced. The gills represent a really clever adaptation that allow fungi to expand their spore producing surfaces.
