2D WORK
TRIPTYCH
Acrylic paint and an airbrush.
Each triptych differs slightly because of variating circle placement. Across each page the colored circles are moved an increased distance from the center towards the edge. This simple movement creates motion as the colors build up, it also redistributes each images aesthetic and overall energy.
GRADIENTS
Acrylic paint applied with an airbrush.
The gradients are built up slowly, layering the paint to give each page a three dimensional quality. The slow build of layers enables you to give a flat page the illusion of shape either as a sphere or as bouncing ripples. The light shading at the edge and shift in color weight gives the image an enjoyable rich depth of color.
INJECTION
Acrylic paint applied with custom made tools.
The circle represents perfection but how it is constructed is imperfect. The splashed paint and the randomness of its fall on the page is sporadic, yet its overall shape is very clearly defined. The overall aesthetic is considered and neat despite its construction. These relate to my ambition of making imagery that is perfectly, imperfect.
IMPASTO
Acrylic paint applied with custom made tools.
These were all made with the intent of building physical dimension into the work. I used a variety of different tools with heavy and textured paint mediums to achieve this. Building the layers whilst the canvas was in motion resulted in some unexpected surface tension and color distribution that left the final pieces with a nice sense of movement.
NEON
Acrylic paint applied with custom made tools.
The neons were my first exploratory work. I really enjoyed figuring out how to formulate techniques to accurately graduate paint, to layer injected spray over paint fades and to give floating dimension to solid circles. These were all completed on a moving canvas which added to the fun.
MONOCHROME
Acrylic paint applied with custom made tools.
I removed the color for these images which allowed me to focus on creating new textures. Combining techniques and using a variety of paints I was able to build up layers with different surface interests. I also manipulated a variety of mediums to create interest with different matt and shine finishes. The movement of the page created some nice layered lines with subtle changes within the flow of the paint.
